If Only I’d Known How to Organize My High School Locker

By Maire Kaye

messylocker.jpgWhen I was in high school, most of my fellow students went to their locker between classes. Not me! I knew that the three minute ‘passage time’ we had was not long enough for me to conquer my locker.

Locker 613 was a declared avalanche zone - every time I opened it, I would need two of my friends to help shore up the mass while I rummaged around for a book.

I’d totally go back
Ah, things would have been so different if I had this Locker Organizer. It adds some much needed shelving to the open expanse of a locker. If I could time travel, I’d totally go back and give this to my younger self. And then I’d tell myself not to try to dye my hair platinum.

It's not high school lockers that throw me for a loop. I have a terrible time trying to decide whether to file my digital photos by date or category. And if it's category, my mind can find many descriptions (most are accurate, but may confuse me later…or not). Here are examples of what I do, which may reveal me as a scatterbrain or someone incredibly brilliant (not sure; jury's out):

ANTHURIUM: Hawaii, Red Flowers, Tropical Blossoms, My 2006 Trip to Holualoa, The Day When I Shot A Wild Hawk (with my camera), or Shiny-Finish Kind of Weird-Looking Flowers?

MEERKATS: Wildlife World Zoo, Animals, social primarily insectivorous mammal, African Mongoose, Cute Fuzzy Brownish Creatures, or Tiny Animals That Smile?

Placing my photos in categories so I can retrieve them when I want to work on them has become an exercise in wasted time…time I can put to better use.

If someone can provide some tips on how to index photos, I will be forever grateful. If I remember to put that person's name some place where I can find it!

Judy - What a great question! I'm going to confer with some of the photographers I know, and compile their tips for digital photo storage. I realized that I too have a ton of photos (quite a few from Hawaii, as a matter of fact! Do you need one of a blurry mongoose?) that need some serious organizing! Keep an eye out for a future post that will solve your (and my) digital photo woes!

By the way, until then - I love your categories! I definitely see signs of incredible brilliance!
