How to Make Creative Clutter Cute

By Megan Samuels

Most creative people will agree: it's practically impossible to live a spartan life when it comes to our work space. we're visual animals.

ikea drawers, pimped out with scrap booking paperWe need to see our 'stuff'; be inspired by what others may see as 'trash'. With that said, i share with you one wonderfully beautiful yet organized creative space and 2 d.i.y. inspires.

Keep in mind: this photo is about the 'pimp' factor of a basic Ikea drawer set (because as you can see, this isn't really the tidiest of shots) lovely idea, scrapbook paper applied to each drawer. Take it up another notch and color code the fronts according to their contents.

work roomOoh. how do i love this organizational d.i.y.? Let me count the ways:
1. beautiful
2. you can find exactly what you need
3. gorgeous
4. no more tangles
5. and just plain old pretty

and how i love the use of the amish peg with hanging bags. a great way to show off a collection while making it functional. (btw, great wall color) thank you to the flickr members, 'plumpudding' and 'littleiamblue' for their photo contributions.
super ziper

Megan,
This does look quite pretty…I'd love to know prices for some of these items if possible.

I am all about the organizing - it's the expensive part that is difficult & I find that most magazines I pick up cannot relate to the average person out there who doesn't have $$$ to make it all look so nice.

I'd love to read more articles pertaining to organizing with low-cost or no-cost ways.

hi lyn,

IKEA is great this way. Always easy on the pocket. The drawer system is from their FÖRHÖJA line. Depending on which style you get, the prices range from $14.00 to $20.00 approx. they have an online site, ikea.com.

The paper can be found on line by searching under 'scrap book paper' one of my favorite resources is papersource.com. oragami paper would be a fun choice too! An average page cost is under $1.00.

hope this helps!

Hi Megan,
I love the creative details and I agree, color coding is very functional! I want to know what's in a container before I have to pull it down off the shelf and if you have a cute print on the box or some other code it makes a big difference. Do you have ideas on organizing jewelry? Thanks! Ali

I use my IKEA box for storing all my daughter's hair accessories. One box for pony tail holders, one for itty bitty clippies, another for barrettes, etc… And I fancied mine up by using a different hue of RIT clothing dye on each one. BTW, before I had kids, I used this same IKEA box for office supplies. Pens in one box, paper clips in another… you get the idea.
