Organizing Digital Photos

By Maire Kaye

photo boxOne of the things I love about my digital camera is that I don't have to spend money developing film, or try to find room for shoe boxes full of photos.

Unfortunately, I sometimes spend an hour or two trying to find a photo on my hard drive! So I developed a quick and easy system that works for me and may also help you.

Sub-folders are your friends
I’ve created a folder on my desktop, and labeled it 2007. In that folder, I’ve created 12 individual folders, where I file the photos I shoot that month. If there is a special event during the month (a party, or a vacation), I make a sub-folder within the month for those particular pictures. Some of my sub-folders have sub-folders, and that's why I can always find the picture I want.

But you may want something that’s a little more in-depth - something like photo organizing software! One of the most popular is Google's Picasa. This free software lets you easily find, edit, and share the photos on your PC! It even has touch-up technology - so you can remove red-eye, brighten dark photos and more!

Flickr is a great online tool that lets you organize your photos online, where you can easily share them with friends and family, or the whole world. They can even print out their favorite ones!

How are you organizing your digital photos?

I sort all the photos on my PC by event, location, or person.

My Flickr account is set up much in the same way. I've purchased a "pro" account so I can create as many sets and collections as I need.

I have a temp folder labeled "from camera" that I keep for the photos I have yet to subdivide. One more than I've labeled "for printing". These are photos that have been photoshopped and need to be sent out for printing. (Now if I could actually get my act together and get them done so I can use one of my many empty frames :)

Amber - I love the idea of 'for printing' folder. I'm going to create one of those right now!
