Modular Systems Maximize Your Home’s Organizing Potential

By Emily Weigel

modularsystemsYou would never buy yourself a pair of shoes that were two sizes too big, or pants that were uncomfortable, or a two-seater car for your 6-person family. Why would you buy a storage system that doesn’t fit your home’s organizational needs?

Sometimes bookcases, cabinets, and shelving systems provide very limited possibilities for storage. Often, space is wasted due to cookie-cutter designs and poor placement of shelves and cubbies.

Modular Storage Systems should not be overlooked when planning a shelving unit in your garage, bedroom, closet, living room, or any room, for that matter. There are all sorts of “cubbies” available, including ones with drawers, shelves, swing doors, roll top doors, wine racks, and more. You can design an entire system, perfectly tailored to your needs, for what you might spend on a regular bookcase, cabinet, or even TV stand.

Here are some tips for designing a modular system:

•What are you storing in the system? Group items together, such as books, display items, unsightly objects, DVD’s, etc. Doing this will give you a visual of how many of each type of cubby you’ll need.

•Utilize the diverse selection. Remember, you’re no longer stuck with four stationary shelves and having to find shelf boxes to store items. If you need a cubby with drawers, should you get a single or double drawer unit? Or perhaps both, to have variety?

•With a modular system, you have the freedom to custom design it to complement the room. If you have a small room, you may want to have a system that’s to scale. Maybe the room will flow better with the system in a corner. No matter what, your new storage unit was designed by YOU, and not someone else!

Are there places in your home that could benefit from a custom storage solution?
