Out of Sight, Not Out of Mind

In an ideal world, we'd all have a big sealable plastic tub to store and tote our disaster supply kit. It's durable, it's water-resistant, and it's clear so you can tell at a glance what is inside and where. It's also bulky and somewhat unsightly, and those living in apartments or other small domiciles might not have a great place to store the kit.

Better to have a small kit than none at all.

Simple solution? A picnic basket. You're likely only going to use it for outings a couple of times a year, and the rest of the time it sits empty. Be sure to use some type of plastic lining on the inside to keep moisture out and contain any spill that might occur.

The basket is friendly enough that it will work with most any decor, and it's easy enough to carry if you find yourself evacuating with little notice. There's enough room for all essentials (water, canned food, medications, flashlight, radio, batteries) for one, maybe two people. Again, it's not the first choice - but it just might fit singles or those with mobile lifestyles. (And if it encourages you to have a picnic every once in a while… bonus!)
