Organizing Out-of-Reach Closet Shelves

I am short and what I wouldn't give sometimes to be tall.  I often find myself staring at the sweaters on the top shelf of my closet, wishing that I had "Go-Go-Gadget" legs to boost myself up!  Organizing shelves, especially those mounted too high to reach properly, can be a huge headache.  I recommend using the following tools to help organize out-of-reach closet shelves:  

1) Step Stool

If you are unable to reach a shelf with ease, you are less inclined to return items back to the shelf where they belong.  And we all know what that means: you will end up with a clutter pile-up on your hands! Invest in a stool specifically for your closet and store it inside the closet or under the bed for easy access.  Any stool will do, but it is probably best to have a foldable stool so that it takes up less room.  I use one like the Step Stool with Mats (3 Steps) available through Stacks and Stacks. 

(2) Shelf Dividers

When you use wire shelf dividers, finding what you're looking for is as easy as 1-2-3!  Dividers allow you to stack clothing articles vertically, and you don't have to worry about the stack tipping over or tumbling down.  You can use shelf dividers to organize sweaters, purses, pants, and more!

(If you have wire shelves, these dividers will not clamp properly.)

(3) Clear or Transparent Plastic Containers

Clear or transparent plastic containers are the best option for high-mounted shelves.  You can quickly peruse container contents and know exactly what side of the shelf to place the stool.  If you use solid-colored tubs, you may think an item is in one bin and climb up to get it, only to find that the item isn't where you thought it would be; you will lose time and energy this way.  In addition to providing greater visibility, clear containers will protect your clothes and accessories from dust and lint!

Before you purchase any clear bin for a shelf, make sure you measure the length, width, and height of the shelf itself…this will ensure you don't buy a container that is too small or too big for the job.  Stacks and Stacks offers many storage bins in different sizes.
