A New Year's Resolution List That Sticks!

By Jan Hayner

resolutionDo you ever wonder why you don't follow through on your New Year’s resolutions? Do you ever wonder what happened to all of that determination that you had when you made your list?

If you’re like me, you tend to make a dozen New Years Resolutions and don't really follow through on any of them. Why I can follow through on so many things in my life, make lists and get them finished, but I mess up on this, year after year. Actually, it’s very simple! None of the things on my list were really what I considered a priority in my life. Sure they all were things that I had thought about, or rather 'wished' about, from time to time, but none were going to make or break my life style.

Just think about the last resolutions list that you made. When you read over the list, were any of those things really important to you? Probably not. They are probably a lot like the things on my list; if they happen it would be nice, but I am not going to knock myself out trying to get them done. Does that sound about right?

So this year I have a new goal; to have only priority things on my list. Things that I know I really want to have changed and improved about myself or my surroundings. The day after New Years, I will tackle my list just like any other I make. I will start with item number one and keep going until they are all finished. Not only will I have the list but I will set a deadline for myself to have all of this finished. My guess would be that thirty days should be long enough to finish them all, because now I have a goal in mind that I am willing and able to achieve.

Got any resolutions you’d like to share?

Great point! Plus, there were two little nuggets of information in there that we typically forget when it comes to New Years Resolutions === quantify it somehow. "I will lose weight in 2008" is not nearly as powerful as "I will lose 10 pounds in 30 days". Now that's a goal I can measure and track.

Great blog by the way!! :-)

I strongly believe that you can accomplish anything if you have a thorough plan in place.

I have a guide to setting and executing successful New Year's Resolutions on my blog that you might find helpful :)

Hello!
I just moved overseas to Berlin and am in the middle of starting a new home. Your website is a Godsend!

If anyone in the U.S. is interested:
My friend, Mike, is working on a contest for Style Magazine, looking for 'America's Messiest' home. I think the winner gets a $10,000 make-over and a huge help in starting to de-clutter their lives. He says that the contest is still fairly new, so any entry has a good chance at getting to final pick stage.

Good luck and thank you for all of your wonderful articles!!!

Ya know what?

I decided to downsize my resolutions this year. I only had one and actually rsolved it a day EARLY! Now there's no pressure or obligation to "cross things off my list"!

Way to go Kay-c! It's good to set yourself up for success instead of failure. :)
