The De-Cluttering Transformation

By Eva Wallace

rosesOur recently befriended neighbor across the street is 70 years old and without any family to speak of. For years, she cleaned her own house and did her own shopping without help. It was wearing on her, though. Her age and her weight made it difficult to do things the way she wanted them done. The clutter slowly took over her home, which led to depression. When we first met her a few months ago, she was mired in clutter, sleeping all the time, and barely leaving her house.

My amazing husband decided it was high time she had some help. He has started to clean her house. Room by room, he’s going through her house sorting and de-cluttering. So far, we have moved out a couple of car-loads of clutter!

The transformation has been amazing! Not only are we uncovering beautiful antiques for her to show off around her home, but we’re uncovering her joy in life as well. I know she is happy for the company, which is surely part of it, but just having her home back has given her such pride in her surroundings that she enjoys waking up to it in the morning.

She gets up every day now and makes her bed so she can appreciate her beautiful bedroom. She loves spending the afternoons in her newly de-cluttered living room admiring her rearranged artwork on the walls.

The transformation of her home has caused a transformation of her spirit. She has energy now and loves to go places again - and she’s losing weight, too! It's absolutely amazing to me how every part of our lives has an effect on every other part.

We hear about and see daily the wrongs of the world and there certainly are plenty; in the midst of such global heartache, we mustn’t forget the triumph of the human spirit when one person extends a caring hand to another.

What a great act you and your family are providing for your neighbor; I hope all who read this article draw from its inspirational points! It's often the smallest acts of kindness that reinforce hope in today's modern world!

Thank-you so much for posting, Eva.

Thank you, Kay-c!

It's amazing, too, how much more meaning your own life takes on when you reach out to others.

I couldn't agree more!

There's a natural part of us that is replenished when we give back.

Eva,

What a wonderful gift you and your husband are giving to your neighbor.

Make no mistake, you are giving her peace - and peace in anyones life can make a HUGE difference.

I live in a very rural community and there are many elderly here. Most are in homes that have been in their families for generations and none of them want to move into assisted living.

8 months ago, my mother in law and I turned what you are doing now into a small business. Our rates are lower than the local house cleaning services, and we provide services that go far beyond theirs.

We do everything from cleaning and decluttering to errands - little things like changing light bulbs, window shades, heater filters or taking them to hair appointments up to larger things like banking or grocery shopping.

I adore our clients. They just want to live in their own homes, but as you stated, some things just get beyond them as they grow older.

They also love the company, chatting as we work - and let me tell you, I've met some amazing people that I now consider friends.

I love this job more than anything I've ever done - after years of being Suzy corporate, I've finally find my niche.

What a wonderful business, Tink! You know you’ve found your niche when you would do it even if you didn’t get paid.

"You know you’ve found your niche when you would do it even if you didn’t get paid."

Bingo!

That's exactly what got us started, just helping out neighbors.

We turned it into part time (3 days a week)business. We're now at 29 clients spread over 5 mornings per week.

We'd have the clients to do this full time, but part time is plenty for us. Mentally, it doesn't feel like work, but our bodies tell us it is.

I love it though - making a difference to someone's life.

That's fantastic! Very encouraging. We live in a mobile home park with a lot of elderly people. I'll tell my hubby about your business. He's an entrepreneur at heart, and along with his love of helping people, he could start up something wonderful! Thanks, Tink!
