Just Do It

By Carmen Coker

I'm not normally a procrastinator, but I have my moments. And one of those moments happened this weekend.

I recently returned from an out-of-town trip, and I needed to clean the house…do some laundry… and frankly, I was just not in the mood! I wanted to be lazy and just veg out in front of the TV.

So I plopped myself down on the couch to do just that. But, you know what? I couldn't really relax! I knew that I had things to accomplish to keep our home in working order, and those things were subconsciously bugging me, eating away at my brain.

On my way to the kitchen for a snack, I spotted a pair of my husband's Nike shoes by the back door. When I saw them, I was immediately reminded of 2 different things: (1) I saw the swoosh, and the famous Nike slogan "Just Do It" popped into my head, and (2) I needed to pick up shoes at the back door and put them away - part of the straightening up I needed to do.

Hmmm…you can probably see where I am going with this story! Just Do It + Tasks = Good Motto. I spent most of the afternoon on Saturday avoiding my TO DOs and thus not truly enjoying my down time. If I would have just tackled my task list first and then taken some time to relax, my time off would have been much more effective!

Have you fallen into a similar trap? It's easy to do!! Maybe you have put off a project that would help you get organized - you know the end result will benefit your life, but something always distracts you from reaching your goal…Well, I'd much rather read my book, surf the internet, go to the gym, etc. And to make matters worse, every time you are reminded of this organizing project, it nags you…Man, I really need to do that!

If this sounds like your situation, then think about those 3 little words for a sec: JUST DO IT. And now stop thinking about them and apply them! You'll be glad you did.

So very true! I find myself thinking constantly about the chores I am shirking, and it really does bring me down. I find myself getting easily irritated at the tv show I wanted to watch, or frustrated with my knitting, which are the "fun" things I wanted to do INSTEAD of cleaning! So NOT doing my chores gets me in a bad mood. Then I find myself getting short tempered with my dogs, when they are just being their normal high maintenance selves. When I realized this, it was very enlightening, and now when I feel this way, I get up and clean!
