Favourite Organising Tools #4 - Masking Tape

By Marcia Francois

masking-tapeI saw this excellent tip from Deniece Schofield’s book, Confessions of an Organized Homemaker, when I read it 5 years ago. And I have used it since – in fact, I’m still using the same roll of masking tape!

If you haven’t read this book yet, do yourself a favour and read it.

Masking tape makes the easiest labelling tool ever. Why?

  1. your label can be as long or as short as you like
  2. tape is flexible
  3. it is easy to remove when you want to re-label a container
  4. it is easy to write on

Some of the ways I use masking tape for labelling:

  1. food in the freezer
  2. fridge shelves
  3. pantry shelves
  4. storage containers
  5. computer cords

flourflour containers - btw, I write the best before date on the label too

Do you use masking tape in your house? Can you think of other uses?

i like this idea, because it's cheaper than regular p-touch labels…but…i HATE my handwriting, so i will keep wasting money :-)

Also, masking tape and Sharpie markers are the only combination that works for super cold freezers. I worked at Maggie Moo's and that's what they use to label the ice cream flavors.

Never thought of labeling my shelves in the fridge or pantry. Maybe THIS will finally teach the kids where the butter goes LOL :)

Melinda, thanks for commenting :)

And letting me know about the cold freezers

Nikki - it really works. No more fights about not putting things in the right places :)

Amber - get your hubby to do it for you :)

And if you have a particularly delicate surface to label, try painter's masking tape. It's designed not to leave marks or lift off paint from walls.

I too use it to label some cords and to prevent sticky residue on the cord, I will paste a smaller piece of tape somewhere over the middle part on the sticky side of the labeling tape, so as to minimize contact between the adhesive and cord.
Love tape that is easy to tear :-)
