Finding Hidden Storage Areas in Your Home

By Jan Hayner

109278-storage-cubeIt doesn't make any difference if you have a small efficiency apartment or a large 2500 square foot home, we all run out of storage areas in our home. Do you know that you have a lot more room than you thought to store things and still stay organized?

The first thing that you should consider is your lifestyle. In what rooms do you use specific items, and where can you increase the storage in that area. Like in the living room - you may want a comforter handy for cold winter nights or overnight guests, tuck away magazines out of sight, or have a hidden area for toys. But unfortunately, you have no room to add a storage shelf or cabinet. These ideas may benefit you;

   • Try a storage ottoman
   • Use a trunk, cedar chest or two storage ottomans side by side as a coffee table
   • How about adding filing space by using a filing cabinet as an end table

Maybe you have heirlooms or collectibles that you would like to show off, but there isn't room for a buffet or curio cabinet. Think overhead and around your room in the form of shelves or wall mounted cabinets for practical yet decorative storage.

Bedrooms are an ideal space to discover and add extra storage space. Under the bed boxes and organizers, along with the help of bed risers, will help you achieve that goal. Closets, yes, even small closets can be made more efficient with closet organizers, shelves that go to the ceiling, and storage hangers and compartments for sweaters and sweatshirts.

The laundry room is something that shouldn’t be overlooked in your organizing goal. Moveable storage shelves come in very handy in this room. Place your detergent, bleach, softener and stain remover in this area. Above the washing area you can add small shelves with little decorative bins for those winter gloves and hats, socks that loose their mates, and various other items. Above the dryer is a great place to add a clothes rod to hang shirts, slacks and skirts as they come out of the dryer, to keep them wrinkle-free.

Added space can be found in every room of the home and office with a little imagination and the help of storage organizing tools. Walk through your home with fresh eyes and find all of your hidden areas that will help you to organize your life and workspace and make it stress free, open and inviting.
