Favourite Organising Tools #5 - Timers

By Marcia Francois

11115-timerI have a special something to help me stay focussed.

This is it - a timer.

It is one of my favourite organising tools for these three reasons:

  1. it keeps me focussed and on task
  2. it helps me to work quickly
  3. it helps me to plan for project work

Did you know that work expands to find the time available for it? This is called Parkinson's Law. That's why if you plan to clean your house the entire day, you will take the entire day. But if you're going out and you only have 2 hours to do it, it will get done in that time.

1. I use this one in the kitchen (because the oven one doesn't work properly) and in the laundry area. When I have something in the oven (like now as I'm typing this), I take the timer with me so I don't forget about my cooking.

2. And I use this one in my study for the computer and in the bedroom when I'm sorting cupboards or doing some quick reorganising (like I need to do this weekend with my handbags)

Do you use timers? How else do you use them?

I use a 3 minute glass timer on my desk at work.

Whenever someone asks if they can talk with me, I flip the timer over and say, yes, you have 3 minutes.

You can always give them more time if it is merited, but it sure helps to shorten the time wasting parts of the conversations.

Wow how timely! (and yes that is a pun but it's also true!) because just yesterday, I found this online stopwatch:

I found it VERY useful to set this timer so I'd remember to put the clothes in the dryer!
I always forget until right before bedtime, which is terrible if you need an outfit for work. So I end up drying them anyway, and then they get wrinkled.

I live by the time… It causes me to not spend too much time doing anyone thing… So I usually spend 15 in the kitchen… 15 in the Living Room… etc… You would be amazed at how successful I can be in 15 minutes… The timer method has saved me more then once…
