Celebrate New Year’s Eve with class — and good food

We’re just starting to reach the calm after the storm of Christmas, and here comes New Year’s Eve. If you hosting this event, it can be easy to give in and let it get out of control. But this celebration can be simple and elegant. Here are some tips to ring in your new year with less work.

  • Serve small plates: Since most of your party-goers won’t be arriving until later in the evening, you don’t need to plan a large meal. Make prep and clean up easier on yourself by serving small plates or horderves. Divided serving dishes make it super simple to present small offerings like olives, nuts, cheese and more.
  • Utilize serving trays: While we’re on the subject, serving trays will be your best friend. With them, you won’t clutter up your surfaces with your normal plates. And some designs, like this one with room for ice, are designed to keep your food cold all night — so food is fresh for all parry-goers, no matter what time they show up. Tiered serving trays are also a great investment; these decorative pieces are also super convenient because they allow you to present more options without taking up previous space.
  • Use a serving caddy: Keep plates, napkins, flatware and serving pieces all in one area. These awesome caddies make it even easier for guests to help themselves to food. Opt for the disposable plates and flatware, too.

Welcome guests with the perfect entryway furniture

Facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmail

Expecting guests for Christmas? Make sure you have the space in your entryway for all of their stuff.

When I was a kid, my parents would always heap guests coats and bags in one, unmanageable pile on the bed in their bedroom. This set up is undesirable for many reasons. It makes it awkward for your guests and yourself. Not only do guests now have to break up the festivities to inquire about their belongings if they want to leave, but they are forced to dig for their jacket under the mess. Plus, it invites guests into parts of your home that, if you’re like me, you’d prefer they stay out of. Between dinner prep, cleaning the living room, bathroom and more, there is no time left to clean my bedroom when I’m expecting guests. So why invite them in there?

All of this is easily avoidable.Embedded image permalink

One simple Google search will show you that there are millions of ways to accomplish an accommodating foyer without construction. Simple pieces  of entryway furniture create vertical storage that is great for holidays or everyday use.

I want to draw attention to one multi-purpose entryway organizer in particular. This sleek black design from Whitmor covers all bases. It has hooks for coats, a drawer for personal items, shelves for bags or wallets and an umbrella cubby for wet items. Here are the specifics:

  • Constructed from durable, long-lasting wood in an espresso finish.
  • A single drawer gives you concealed storage space for accessories.
  • Three shelves offer space to store and display a wide array of items.
  • Eight double hooks at the top provide space to store coats and hats.
  • Bottom stand holds long umbrellas upright and securely in place.
  • Prevents you from tracking debris past the entryway of your home.
  • Instructions are included for a quick assembly process upon arrival.

I love this piece because it does so much and still looks good. It’s not clunky or over-sized; it looks great in small and large rooms alike and will always be helpful.

Modern alternatives to Christmas tree skirts

I’m really excited about Christmas this year. You see, it’s my first winter in my house and that means it’s the first time I can have a fresh tree for Christmas. My apartment before (and most here in Michigan) did not allow them because of the fire hazard. In my jolly excitement, I’m trying real hard not to go overboard with ornaments, lights and the whole mess.

As I’ve enjoyed decorating my own home for the first time, I have had a real interest in minimalism. I am trying to incorporate that into my holiday decorations. I have an excellent vintage tree topper, some hand-me-down glass bulbs from my parents and the perfect hand-knit stockings. Simple and classic, that’s what I like. But there is one element, that for some reason, I cannot agree upon. Tree skirts.

I just don’t like them; and while I realize I can scrap the detail all together, I would like some element under the tree.

A few months ago we started working with an awesome manufacturer, Bungalow Flooring. Aside from their innovative photo-realistic rugs and padded floor mats, they make some really cool Christmas pieces. If you hadn’t already guessed, my favorite is fit for your tree. Buy Bridesmaid dresses NZ at discount price at Topbridal.co.nz

The Bungalow Tree Mat is a round rug designed to protect hard floors from tree stands. Available in multiple designs — and each in 19 different colors — these mats are a great modern alternative to your mama’s old tree skirt.

Patterns include snowflakes (at right), little Christmas trees or reindeer.

You can choose colors from purple to orange, from teal to yellow; my house is all reds and teals so I think I’m gonna go with the basics and opt for the bright, cheery red.

A polypropylene front and rubber backing is skid resistant as well as resistant to mold, mildew, rot, cracking and other wear. The wide border helps contain any spilled water and dirt, keeping floors clean.

Measuring 35 inches in diameter, this protective floor rug is great for any area of the home. Now that I can do a fresh tree, I just may consider adding one in the master bedroom too. Imagine waking up to the wonderful scent of blue spruce every morning. Does it get any better?

Better yet, Bungalow Flooring manufacturers all of their products right here in the United States. I love these mats and it makes me even happier to support a U.S. manufacturer.
